Soft Power
Power that aims to persuade others via appeals & attraction; the power to convince
Military Power
Power exercised via the development and threatened use of military troops, aircraft and naval forces
Nation-State
A country that has the characteristics of a nation along with the recognized sovereignty of a state
State
The main actor in global politics that is characterized by a permanent population, defined territorial borders, and recognised sovereignty
Nation
Groups of people who share common bonds based on culture, language, and history
Economic Power
Power exercised via the wealth of a state as well as their ability to generate future wealth
Sovereignty
Internationally recognized control over a state’s territory that proves it with legitimate political authority
Diplomatic
Power exercised via discussions and agreements between states in pursuit of national interests
Non-State actors
A global actor that is not a state but still influences global politics e.g non-governmental organizations (WGO’S)
Political Power
Use of the state’s internal political machinery to exert influence over other’s and/or decision making capacity within collectives e.g UN
Cultural Power
Power exercised via ideas & practices that can promote a positive image of a state, or help spread it’s values
Hard Power
Power that aims to influence others via force and coercion; the power to compel
Politics
Activities that relate to influencing the actions and policies of a government or getting and keeping power in a government
Power
The ability of one global actor to influence the actions of another global actor
Democracy
Democracy is the theory that people should vote in the people in power
Liberal democracy
involves policies that focus on and encourages capitalism
Liberal democracy
involves policies that focus on and encourages capitalism
Representative democracy
Citizens vote for other citizens to put them in government so they can represent their ides in democracy
Constitutional Monarchy
A political system where the monarch is put in power through family lines, their power is in reason of the constitution
Socialism
Left wing ideology that the production, distribution and wealth in society should be owned by the government on behalf of the people
Fascism
Right wing ideology that is based on the extreme views of nationalism, authoritarianism, and anti-democratic beliefs
Authoritarianism
Theocracy
Form of government in which in or more deities are recognized as supreme ruling authority
Ideology
A set of beliefs or philosophies attributed to a person or group
