Why is it a key area for health action or improvement?

* decreased physical fitness
* potential effects on lung growth and function
* potential effects on the structure and functioning of the brain.

Alcohol is a depressant drug. Depressant drugs slow down the messages travelling between the brain and body.

Pharmaceuticals- available from a pharmacy, over the counter or by prescription which may be subject to misuse eg steroids, opioid based pain relief
Other psychoactive substances- legal or illegal, potentially used in a harmful way eg paint, glue, petrol.
