Health (WHO 1946)
A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
List some limitations of the WHO 1946 definition
- Realistically humans do not show a complete state of health
- Identification of only 3 dimensions of health is considered problematic due to having 5 dimensions of health and the unrealistic standards for health in individuals, impractical for the real world
- Broad as a strong judgement is made about whether a person is healthy or not
- Fails to consider individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities who may not have “complete wellbeing” but can still live a fulfilling life
Wellbeing
