A

What is the difference between unitary and federal?

A

Power is divided between the national government and state and local governments, whereas in a unitary system very little power is diffused among its regional parts, creating a strong sense of nationalism.

A

“Packing” the opposing political party into a single district, thereby giving the opportunity for others to win the majority.

Or “cracking” the district, spreading the party out across multiple districts to dilute the power to vote.

A

When a group of people identify themselves more as members of their ethnic group than citizens of the state.

Example: The Basque people identify themselves more as part of an ethnic group, the Kurds are yet another example.

A

Distance between two areas, such as Manila in the Philippines, is too much for the government to control and can lead to conflict and feelings of self-determination.

What are devolutionary forces?

A

Ethnic separatism, distance decay, variations in a state’s economic productivity, and discrimination creating rifts.

Example: One region of Canada has massive resource production, but the other uses that for business. This creates feelings of self-determination and resent, as that region wishes to have more control over its resources.

What is an example of destabalization?

A

The Philipine governent resettled Christian people from other parts of the country in Mindanao, which was inhabited by ingigenous peoples mostly of Muslim heritage. They were given serrvices that were not give to the Muslim population, causing destabalization. Distancne between teh two areas rendered the government unable to affect what happened there.
