A reference to something outside the text which it’s meaning is not explained but assumed.
Metaphor
An implicit comparison between two objects to create abstract meaning
Juxtaposition
The placement of two words, ideas, or images next to each other for the purpose of developing comparisons and contrast
Apostrophe
A figure of speech in which the speaker addresses an inanimate object
Conceit
A Comparison between two drastically different things that can extend several lines
Symbol
A concrete object given an abstract meaning

A metaphorical comparison that encompasses several lines or stanzas, or in some cases, an entire poem
