Anecdote
A short, simple narrative of an incident, used for humorous effect
ex: someone arguing for healthcare gives an anecdote of a girl who wasn’t able to have a transplant
Argumentation
Writing that attempts to prove the validity of a point of view or an idea through arguments
Allegory
An extended narrative of an incident in a phrase or verse in which characters, events, and settings represent abstract qualities(second meaning)
ex: the deeper meaning in a story, what something symbolizes
Annotation
Explanatory notes added to a text to explain, cite sources, or give bibliographic data
Antithesis
The presentation of two contrasting images, balanced by: word, phrase, clause, or paragraphs
ex: speech is silver, but silence is gold
Rhetoric
The art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing
Colloquialism
A word or phrase used in everyday conversation and informal writing, but is inappropriate in formal writing
ex: ya’ll
Connotation
words suggesting implied meaning because of it’s association in a readers mind
ex: She’s feeling blue…
Consonance
repetition of identical consonant sounds within two or more words in close proximity
ex: boot, beat, best, brag…
Caricature
descriptive writing that greatly exaggerates a specific feature of a person’s appearance
Coherence
the quality of a piece of writing in which all the parts contribute to the development of the central idea
Aphorism
a short, often witty, statement of a principle or truth about life
ex: you don’t know what someone is going through until you walk a mile in their shoes
Apostrophe
usually in poetry, but sometimes in prose; the device of calling out to an imaginary, dead, or absent person
ex: “O, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?”
Cacophony
also referred to as dissonance; hard, awkward, or dissonant sounds used in poetry
ex: brillig, gimble, jugjub…
Denotation
the literal definition of a word, not word the word symbolizes or could mean
ex: blue is the color blue, not meaning something is sad
Enumeration
a rhetorical device used for listing the details or a process of mentioning words or phrases step by step
Analogy
a comparison in which an idea or a thing is compared to another thing that is quite different
Parallelism
the use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same; or similar in construction, sound, or meaning
ex: he likes running, throwing, and hitting
Allusion
a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, or thing of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance
ex: calling someone something they’re acting like
Metonymy
a figure of speech that replaces the name of a thing with the name of something else that is closely associated
ex: “let me give you a hand”
Anaphora
the deliberate repetition of the first part of the sentence in order to achieve on artistic effect
ex: “I have a dream that…, I have a dream when…”
Epistrophe
derived from a Greek word that means turning upon, which indicates the same word returns at the end of each sentence
ex: opposite of anaphora
Asyndeton
a stylic device used in literature and poetry to eliminate conjunctions between phrases and in the sentence
ex:who created you, who beat you, who deceived you…
Polysyndeton
makes use of coordinating conjunctions like “and”, “or”, “but”, and “nor”, which are used to join successive words, phrases, or clauses.
ex: “I wore a sweater, and a hat, and a scarf, and mittens…”
