What is a nation?
A group of people with a common culture living in a territory and having a strong sense of unity.
Define nation-state.
A state whose territory corresponds to that occupied by a particular ethnicity that has been transformed into a nationality.
What is a stateless nation?
A nationality that is not represented by a state.
What characterizes a multinational state?
A state that contains two or more ethnic groups with traditions of self-determination that agree to coexist peacefully by recognizing each other as distinct nationalities.
Define multistate nation.
A nation that stretches across borders and across states.
What is sovereignty?
The ability of a state to govern its territory free from control of its internal affairs by other states.
What does self-determination refer to?
The right of people to choose their own form of government.
What are independence movements?
Movements that are trying to gain political independence for areas that they believe should be their own country.
Define devolution.
The process whereby regions within a state demand and gain political strength and growing autonomy at the expense of the central government.
What is neocolonialism?
Economic dominance of a weaker country by a more powerful one, while maintaining the legal independence of the weaker state.
What is a shatterbelt?
A region caught between stronger colliding external cultural-political forces, under persistent stress, and often fragmented by aggressive rivals.
Define choke point.
A point of congestion or blockage.
What does territoriality signify?
A country’s or local community’s sense of property and attachment toward its territory.
What are relic boundaries?
Old political boundaries that no longer exist as international borders but have left an enduring mark on local cultural or environmental geography.
What is a superimposed boundary?
A boundary that is imposed on the cultural landscape, ignoring pre-existing cultural patterns.
Define subsequent boundaries.
Boundary lines established after an area has been settled that consider the social and cultural characteristics of the area.
What are antecedent boundaries?
Boundaries created before the present-day cultural landscape developed.
What are geometric boundaries?
Political boundaries defined and delimited as straight lines or arcs.
Define consequent boundaries.
Boundaries between states set by ethical differences, especially those based on language and/or religion.
What is a demarcated boundary?
A boundary marked by some visible means on the ground.
What are national boundaries?
Political borders that follow natural environmental features, such as rivers or mountain ridges.
What is a land boundary?
A line of demarcation between adjoining parcels of land.

Conceptual divisions of the Earth’s water surface areas using physiographic or geopolitical criteria.
