Describe how music expresses Catholic beliefs about eternal life (refer to Faure’s Requiem)
Main part of worship is the mass. Music is an important part of mass. Uses music to offer hope and comfort for the loved ones grieving at funerals. Faure is used at Catholic funerals to remove fear of death. Angelic music portrays heaven and focuses on eternal life. The music is peaceful showing the dead person is at peace. Offers comfort and hope the person will have eternal life in heaven. Music is calming to help those grieving.
26
Explain why Roman Catholics pray and have masses for the dead.
Catholics pray and have masses for the dead. Catholics believe in life after death and prayers are said in hope the person will have eternal life with God. They ask God to welcome the deceased into his prescence so they can have eternal life ‘let perpetual life shine upon him/her. May he/she rest in peace. May ask a priest to offer a mass to someone who has died. The persons name may be mentioned during the eucharistic prayer. Musci offers hope and comfort for loved ones grieving at funerals.
27
Explain how Faure’s Requiem expresses Catholic beliefs about eternal life.
He wrote music traditionally used at Catholic funerals. He wrote it following the death of his father. Shows Catholic beliefs about eternal life. He wanted to show you could be sad about the death of loved ones while hoping after death they have eternal life with God. Focuses on the dead will be in heaven by using angelic music. Helps the grieving have faith comfort and hope. Doesnt focus on sadness but peaceful and fear free nature of death.
28
Describe the different theories of punishment.
Retribution. Making a criminal pay for their crime. ‘An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth’. Giving the death penalty to someone who murdered. Deterrence. Punishment so severe it puts people off commiting the crime. Rehabillitation. Helps criminals reform so they dont commit crimes again. An educated criminal is less likely to commit further crimes.
29
Explain the different theories of punishment.
Retribution is making a criminal pay for their crime. The death penalty for a murderer is seen as a fair reaction ‘an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth’. Deterrence is making the punishment so severe it puts people off commiting the crime. If the criminal faces severe punishment they will think twice before breaking the law. Rehabillitation helps criminals reform so they dont commit crimes again. It links to forgiveness ‘turn the other cheek’.
30
Punishment should always try to reform a person. (AGREE)
Forgiveness shows people should be given a second chance shown in the parable of the forgiving servant. Forgiveness based on the example of Jesus as he said to Peter ‘you should forgive not seven but seventy seven times’ Our Father shows people can only expect forgiveness if they are forgiving towards others.
31
Punishments should always try to reform a person. (DISAGREE)
Retribution. | Deterrence.
32
Describe Roman Catholic teaching on capital punishment.
Where a person is put to death as a punishment for their crime. Roman Catholics believe it is acceptable but dont encourage it. St Augustine said ‘there is no space to reform a character except in this life’. JP2 wrote a letter that focused on sanctity of life. Capital punishment should only be used if its the only way to protect society from the offender. Pope Francis is against the death penalty. He thinks an innocent person may be put to death and also it goes against Bible teachings.
33
Explain what the Catholic Church teaches about capital punishment.
Accpetable but dont encourage it. If they can fully determine a persons guilt it can be used. St Augustine said ‘there is no space to reform a character except in this life’. Try and reform instead of ending their life. JP2 wrote a letter talking about sanctity of life. He said capital punishment should be avoided ‘unless it is the only way to protect society from the offender’. Pope Francis is against the death penalty. Innocent person may be put to death and goes against Bible teachings and sanctity of life.
34
Capital punishment is always wrong. (DISAGREE)
Genesis ‘whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed’. Old testament ‘an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth’. Form of retribution as a criminal will br made to pay for their actions. JP2 said capital punishment should only be used if it is the only way to protect society from the offender. Good form of deterrance.
35
Capital punishment is always wrong. (AGREE)
Pope Francis ‘say yes to life and no to death’. Imago dei shows only God should end life. Sanctity of life. An innocent person could be executed. ‘Do not kill’ Augustine ‘there is no space to reform character except in this life’.
36
Describe Roman Catholic beliefs about forgiveness.
Based on teachings of Jesus. ‘Our Father’ shows forgiveness. ‘To forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us’. Unforgiving servant makes it clear the servant was wrong not to forgive when he had been forgiven. Jesus told people ‘you should forgive not seven but seventy seven times’ Jesus showed forgiveness on the cross for the people who put him to death.
37
Explain Roman Catholic beliefs about forgiveness.
Based on teachings of Jesus. They should treat people with love, compassion, mercy and forgiveness. Our Father ‘to forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us’. Jesus said there was no limit to forgiveness. ‘You should forgive not seven but seventy seven times’. Beatitudes teach ‘blessed are the merciful’. If we want God to forgive us and show mercy we have to forgive and show mercy.
38
It is impossible to forgive everyone. (AGREE)
Genisis ‘whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed’. Revenge not forgiveness. Old testament ‘an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth’ retribution not forgiveness. Some crimes are so terrible people should not be forgiven. ‘Do not kill’ shows some crimes are unforgivable as they are going directly against God.
39
Describe Roman Catholic beliefs about salvation.
Jesus is the incarnation to help repair the damage created by sin and rebuild the relationship with humanity. Jesus provided salvation through his death. Jesus was a sacrifice so humanity could escape sin. This is like when Jews sacrificed a lamb at passover so they could esacape Egypt. Why Jesus is referred to as ‘lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world’. Resurrection confirmed Jesus was the son of God. If Catholics accept Jesus they will be reusrrected and given salvation.
40
Explain how Roman Catholics can recieve salvation.
Jesus is the incarnation. God took this form to help repair the damage created by sin and repair the relationship with humanity. Jesus showed love of humanity. He cared for the poor, forgave sinners. Inspired others to follow his example. Death on the cross. Like Jewish people sacrificed a lamb at passover to escape Egypt, Jesus became a sacrifice so humanity could escape sin. ‘Lamb of god that takes away the sins of the world.’ Resurrection. ‘I am the resurrection and the life’ showing we could have eternal life with God.
41
A loving God should save everyone (DISAGREE)
Humans have a choice to follow God. If they make the wrong choice the choose not to have salvation. Magesterium ‘there is no salvation outside the church’. If a person does evil they have separated themselves from God no matter how much God wants them to come to him. Gods love is unconditional but it cannot be forced upon us we must accept it. Free will means God can only offer salvation it is up to the individual to accept that offer.
42
Describe the four marks of the Catholic Church.
One. Means there is one God and one Chirch in which to hear his message. Holy. It was founded by Jesus who is the source of holiness so the church is holy by following his example. Can be shown through teachings such as sanctity of life and imago dei. Catholic. Means univeraal and the church has the task of spreading the message of Jesus to the entire world. It is available to everyone. Apostolic. Jesus’ disciples were sent to spread the message. Apostolic succession shows the authority can be traced back all the way to Jesus from the Popes.
43
There is no salvation outside the church. (DISAGREE)
God is omni benevolant and would not condemn anyone to hell. Jesus’ death and resurrection was for everyone not just those in the Church. Other religions are different pathways to salvation. They contain truths whereas the Catholic church contains the whole truth. Catholic means universal so the chirch is for all people. This means salvation is available to all people.
44
Describe Catholic beliefs about Mary as the model of the Church.
She was chosen to be the human mother of Jesus. Without Mary there is no Jesus, no incarnation and therefore no salvation. She acts as a mediator between Catholics and God. She will pray to God on their behalf (intercede). They can light a votive candle and place it by her statue in Church as a symbol of their prayer. Perfect disciple. Shows true faith, dedication and flawless charity. When she was td she would be the mother of Christ she accepted willingly and joyfully. Makes her a role model and guide how people should serve God.
45
Explain why Mary is the model of the Catholic Church.
Without Mary there would be no Jesus, no incarnation and no salvation. She acts as a mediator between people and God. Catholics pray to Mary in the hope she will intercede to God on their behalf. Votive candle can be placed near her statue in Church as a symbol of their prayer. Perfect disciple. Example of flawless charity. She inspires people to take part in charities such as CAFOD and SVP. Had total faith in God and did not question him when she was told she would have a child she accepted willingly and joyfully. She did not desert Jesus and followed him right up to the foot of the cross.
46
Mary should not be prayed to. (AGREE)
Its a way of communitcating with God. Prayer is defined as ‘raising the heart and mind to God’ meaning being totally focused on God. Roman Catholics are monotheist so they should focus prayers of adoration on God not Mary. Our Father is the most important prayer. This prayer is for God not Mary.
47
Describe what Roman Catholics mean by the Body of Christ.
The Church is described as the Body of Christ. St Paul ‘Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so if is with Christ’. This means all members of the Church are united with Jesus. He is the head and all the reat of the Church make up the body. Catholics are the physical form of Jesus on earth. This means they will continue to spread the word. Jesus lives on through his followers. Each person within the Church has a talent they can use for good in the Church.
48
Explain how Jesus is the Body of Christ.
The Church is described as the Body pf Christ. St Paul ‘Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ’. Jesus is the head and all the followers of the Church make up the body. Catholics are the physical form of Jesus on earth. Must continue spreading the word. Jesus lives on through his followers. Each person within the Church has a different talent they can use for the good of the Church. The same way a body has different functions that are used for the good of the whole body. At Eucharist Catholics believe they recieve the Body of Christ.

Celebrate the healing power of Jesus shown in the Gospels when Jesus forgave sins and healed the sick. Final two sacrements are sacrements of service. Help individuals serve the community and bring salvation of others. Vows are made where people commit their lives to each other, God and the Church.
54
Explain how the sacremtns help Catholics acheive salvation.
Baptism helps Catholics achieve salvation. The person becomes part of the family of God. Sacrement of reconcilliation in which they ask God for forgiveness. In orfer to achieve salvation we have to ask Gods mercy. At the Last Supper Jesus took bread and wine and asked his follower to re enact the meal shen they come together. The bread and wine Catholics recieve at Mass is the body and blood of Christ. This is the Eucharist is both a sacrifice and a meal. They believe in the real prescence of Jesus who died for humanities sins.
55
Describe Roman Catholic beliefs about the Eucharist.
Catholics gather to recall the Last Supper when Jesus took the bread and wine and asked his disciples to remember when they did the same. ‘This is my body, take it and eat it. Christians should force others to listen to their beliefs. (AGREE)
Given the responsibility to share the gospel and the teachings of Jesus with others. ‘Make disciples of all nations’ Pope Francis taught evangelisation was the first task of the Church ‘evangelisation is first and foremost about preaching the gospel.’ Main reason of evangelisation is to share love of God. Passing their beliefs onto others can be loving as they can achieve salvation.

Catholics should force others to listen to their beliefs. (DISAGREE)
Uk is a multi faith society where people with different religions and no religion live alongside each other. No one has the right to force others to listen to their beliefs as it could lead to conflict. Church teaches people of other faiths should be respected and sensitive to those who have no beliefs yet seek to do good. Christians should not force their beliefs and should let people have free choice about whether to believe in God or not.
