Q

What is the difference between DMARD’S and SMART drugs?

A

SMART drugs are used to relieve the symptoms - they do not alter the course of the disease.
DMARD’s are used to attempt to slow the progression of the disease itself, prevent further joint destruction and may induce a remission.

2

Biophosphonates are commonly prescribed drugs in the management of osteoporosis. How do they work?

A

By reducing the amount of osteoclast mediated bone resorption.

3

Which over-the-counter drug is contraindicated in a patient with acute gout?

A

Aspirin.

4
Q

Explain the action of rubefacients. Why are they used?

A

These are drugs, which, when applied to skin, cause reddening of the skin by increasing blood flow. They initiate signals which compete with pre-existing pain impulses for access to the CNS. Blood vessels dilate and create sense of warmth.
Used for strains, sprains and other local lesions.
