Applied To Education Flashcards

Q

When working with young children, what issues might come about?

A
  • Interviews: Children might not completely comprehend what’s being asked of them, particularly if it’s an abstract idea, reliant on early memories, or to do with the social/private lives of others, as children tend to think self centredly, their empathy and appreciation of subjective perspective is developing.
  • Vulnerability: Because of the fragility of a child’s psychology and ability to understand, ethical issues arise when asking them to consent.
    Particularly informed consent.
  • Guidelines: These are strict, there’s often gatekeepers.
Researchers are required to disclose precisely and without withholding anything,
This can lead to the Hawthorne effect. (However when working with young children, this is lessened)

Q

What is impression management?

A

A sort of social desirability bias. It refers to an attempt to control of the way people perceive you, preserve your image, status, respectability and or authority.
We are according to Goffman, ‘social actors’, our participation in rituals and research is an opportunity to reinforce to ourselves and others the concept of who we are.
In the case of teachers, they might act to maintain this more than children might.
