Problems of being in stage 5

A

BR is below the required replacement rate, ageing workforce- economic slow down

Smaller population means reduction in spending- economic slow down

Fewer tax payers- less money for services- made worse by increasing cost for services and pensions for the elderly.

Why is the DTM useful

A

Gives a good generalised picture of how a population can change over time.

Easy to compare a country, if you know indicators

Forecasting how its population may change, helps when making policies like one child policy or immigration laws.

Limitations of the DTM

A

Original data used for it was from MDCs, might not be valid model worldwide.

Original didnt have stage 5

Doesnt take EDUCATION and role of WOMEN into account and these affect BR quite a lot.

Different countries different customs

Cant predict exactly when a country will enter a stage

Doesnt consider MIGRATION

A

Population control policies-France and China

Infectious diseases- HIV/AIDs

Civil War e.g. Rawanda, Sierra Leone.
