What is humanistic psychology ?
An approach to understanding behaviour that focuses on the importance of individual experience and each persons ability to determine their own choices and behaviours
What are the 4 basic assumptions of the Humanistic approach ?
1- Every individual is unique
2- Humans have free will
3- People should be viewed holistically
4- The scientific method is not appropriate to measure behaviour
What are the 5 components of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (top to bottom) ?

What is self congruence ?
Refers to the similarity between a persons ideal self and their own self image
What is incongruence ?
Disparity between ideal self and self image
What is self actualisation ?
The desire to grow psychologically and fulfil ones full potential- become what you are capable of
What are conditions of worth ?
When a parent places limits on boundaries of love for their children
What are some strengths of the humanistic approach ?
- It is not reductionist
- It is optimistic
What are some limitations of the humanistic approach ?
- It is culturally biased
- It has little real world application
