[Approaches] Topic 4 - The Cognitive approach Flashcards

1
Q

The Study of internal mental processes

A
  • The Cognitive approach recognises that mental process cannot be studied directly, but must be studied by inferring (basis on observed behaviour) what goes on as a result of measuring behaviour
  • A schema is a cognitive framework that helps organise and interpret information in the brain. Allow us to take shortcuts when interpreting large amounts of information however may lead to stereotypes as we make assumptions about people based on incomplete information. They are developed from experience
  • Cognitive psychologists often develop theoretical models, for example MULTI STORE MODEL to present a pictorial representation of a mental process.

Q

The computer model and emergence of cognitive neuroscience

A
  • The development of computers has led to a computer model of memory. Information stored on hard disk is like LTM and the RAM is like the working memory
  • Neuroscientist are now able to study the living brain using brain imaging technology
[] PET, FMRI, to help psychologist understand how the brain supports different cognitive activities and emotions by showing which parts of the brain are active during different tasks.

Q

Strength of the cognitive approach is

A

Strength of the cognitive approach is its application to the treatment of psychological disorders.

  • The CA has been used to explain how faulty thinking process can cause illness such as depression.
  • Consequently it had led to the development of CBT
  • This matters as the CA has improved the lives of many people

Q

Another strength of the cognitive approach is the use of scientific methods

A
  • Another strength of the cognitive approach is the use of scientific methods
  • Cognitive psychologists use scientific methods to collect and evaluate evidence.
  • Conclusions about the mind are based on far more than common sense and introspection
  • This matters because the conclusions present a more valid representation of the human mind
