What were the two main reasons fro manifest destiny?
- Exploit resources (materialistic)
- Expansion of american influence over continent
- It also propelled the civil war
Mexican-American War
who is the expansionist president and what was his intension?
James K Polk, he instigated the Mexican-American war intentionally to gain most of northern mexico for the US.
What did the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo do?
It ended the Mexican-American War, confirmed the annexation of Texas. In return, Mexico recieved $15 mil. Significant because it establishe the current lands.
What did the Wilmot Provisio do?
It oppsoed slavery in the new territory from Mexico.
The Free Soil Party conveyed what sentiment?
anti slavery
Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay’s Compromise of 1850 consisted of what four main provisions?
- California would enter as a free state
- the slave trade, but not slavery would be abolished in the nations capital
- Fugitive slave law (helped southerners reclaim slaves)
- The status of slavery would be left for the decision of the local white inhabitants to make
Since Kansas was a popular sovereignty state, what happend?
Both pro slavery and abolitionist voters flooded into Kansas to influence the decision on slavery!
Why does the Whig party collapse?
They were unable to develop a response to the political crisis over slavery.
Biggest reason: they wouldn’t support efforts to keep slavery from spreading into western territory
What did th Republican Party believe?
They believed in the same economic development stances of the Whig party yet willingly spoke out against slavery.
Dred Scott Decision
What was so ironic about this?
The Dred Scott Decision showed that the court’s resoning was that even if slaves are within boundery of a free state, they are considered property.
