- indentured servants=
These were people who worked for a certain number of years in return for a passage to the American colonies. they had a contract and worked on farms. after completing the number of years they had to work for they were given Freedom dues which were usually land or money.
- head-right system=
the system gave land to the people who paid for others or themselves to get to the American colonies. a head right meant a certain amount of land usually 50 acres. the system cost more colonists to move in
- William Berkeley=
he was the governor of Virginia from 1642 to 1652 then again from 1660 to 1677. he helped expand virginia. his rule cost a lot of disagreement with the settlers leading to vacant rebellion.
Royal African Company=
it was a British company in 1660 to trade in West africa. the company was involved in the transit clinics slave trade bringing an African to the colonies. the company ended in 1752 due to the company not making much profit and there was a high demand for slaves at the company couldn’t meet.
Nathaniel Bacon/Bacon’s Rebellion=
he was a young farmer who led a rebellion against the government of virginia. the Rebellion caused the tax of the natives and a test to Governor William Berkeley’s rule. the Rebellion started in 1676 to 1677 in Virginia.
middle passage=
it helped transport slaves from Africa america. the slaves had to go through terrible conditions such as small spaces and little air. there were a lot of diseases which caused the death of many slaves. the Middle Passage connected Europe Africa and America.
slaves codes (chattel)=
sequel to A rules laws that talked about the rights of slaves. Shadow slavery you meant enslaved who were seen as property not as people with rights. the codes control and limited the slaves to what they can and can’t do. slave codes gave the owners the right to abuse hit kill the slaves.
Gullah=
this is an African American group in language passed down or adopted from the enslaved Africans from South Carolina and georgia. Gullah language has a mix of background from English West Indian and african-american. the language was created when slaves were forced to talk with people from different backgrounds
ring shout=
It’s a religious dance practice by then sleep of South america. people move in a circle while singing clapping or stomping. the first one accounts of the stands go back to 1840. the dance is performed to become possessed with the Holy Spirit. people move in a counterclockwise direction.
Stono River=
It’s a river located in South carolina. It was a place where many slavery roads took place in 1739. the stone of rebellion in September 9th 1739. it was the largest slave Uprising in the British Mainland after the American Revolution period 30 whites and 44 blacks were killed.
House of Burgesses=
This was the first elected legislative assembly in American colonies. it was created in 1619 in virginia. colonists were allowed to speak opinions on laws and rule. members of the House were called broken Seas and they were early politicians of america. the house ended in May 6th 1776.
FFVs=
They were Rich wealthy families who lived in Virginia during colonial time. they married within their class and had a lot of power. they were descendants of English colonists who lived in Jamestown in 17th century.
midwifery
This is a helping of women while childbirth. Midwives gave care and support before and after delivery. The word mid wife means With a woman. midwives gave checkup birth control and treatments. they have to complete a program and pass the certification exam
Harvard College/William & Mary =
It was founded in 1636 in Massachusetts. William and mary college was created in 1693 in virginia. Hardcrad is the oldest higher education place in the U.S and William and Mary is the second oldest. Three U.S presidents went to William and Mary.
town meeting=
This is where members of a community come together to make decisions. it’s popular in New england. in a town meeting there’s talks about rules laws money tax status and more. these meetings build trust relationships and help achieve goals.
jeremiad=
the word comes from a prophet in the Bible named Jeremiah who warned people to change their ways due to sin. Jeremiah means the downfall of people or groups. it’s a speech talking about downfall.
Half-Way Covenant=
this is a church full in 1662. children who are baptized but came from unconverted church families for baptized and became church members. this gave them rights such as taking part in elections. the children didn’t receive holy communion.
Salem, Mass.=
known for which Trials of 692 many were accused of witchcraft. Salem is a city in North Coast of massachusetts. more than 200 people were accused of witchcraft. the Witchcraft idea started when two girls ages 9/11 became sick and a doctor came and said it was witchcraft.
Witch hunting=
this means The Surge of those who are accused of being a witch. women are main targets. people were thrown into a river with their hands and feet tied and if they escaped they were. the punishment was getting hung or death.
Yankee ingenuity=
the were good at knowing how to solve problems, they went against customs to solve problems; mechanical, religious problems, society problems
They started a new shipping port for the Great Lakes Region.
freedom dues=
this was a reward of land/ money given to the slaves after they finish completing how many years they had to serve. this reward helped the slaves once they got their freedom. freedom news helps Slaves by land plant tobacco raise livestock such as Cows and Bulls.
