House of Burgesses
A representative government, first convened in 1619, that could make laws and levy taxes, with the governor and company council in England being able to veto its acts.
Opechancanough
Powhatan’s younger brother and successor who fought with English colonists/settlers and refused English proposals to put Native children in Christian schools.
Royal colony
Put in place by King James I in 1624, the king and his ministers appointed the governor and advisory council, the king’s Privy Council ratifies all legislation, and residents must pay taxes to support the clergy of the Church of England.
Lord Baltimore
Catholic aristocrat who founded Maryland and settled Catholics subject to prosecution there.
Freeholds
In North America and the Caribbean, plantations were initially farms of 30 to 50 acres owned by families or male partners.
Headright System
Anyone who paid the passage of a new immigrant to the colony was guaranteed 50 acres of land.
Indentured servitude
Contracts which bound men and some women to work for a master for 4 to 5 years, after which they’d be freed completely.
Pilgrims
Religious separatists – Puritans who had separated from the Church of England and sailed to America aboard the Mayflower, led by William Bradford.
