AQA GCSE Biology Microscopy Flashcards
(13 cards)
jnhWhat is the equation for magnification?
Magnification = Image size
____________
Actual size
State two advantages of an electron microscope
. Higher resolution
. Greater magnification
What is the independent variable?
Magnification of the microscope
What is the dependent variable?
Number of cells observed
State two control variables
. Type of microscope
. Preparation of slide
State two hazards and precautions
. Broken glass can cut skin- Throw any broken glass away immediately
. Iodine solution can damage skin- Wear gloves
Why is a drop of iodine solution added?
Iodine solution is a stain. Stains highlight objects in a cell by adding colour to them
Why is a drop of water added to the middle of a clean slide?
To provide a clear view of the specimen
Why should air bubbles not get under the slide?
They’ll obstruct the view of the specimen
Why is epidermal tissue used?
It’s thin and transparent so it’s easy to observe under a microscope
When drawing your observations, what must you ensure?
. Its drawn in clear unbroken lines
. No colouring or shading
Two ways this investigation can be improved
. Ensure there’s consistent lighting throughout
. Repeat the experiment multiple times to check for consistent results
What is the purpose of this practical?
To learn how to use a microscope
