Aquarius solutions Flashcards
(14 cards)
Solution
A Homogenous (looks the same) liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent):
Solvent
a substance that dissolves a solute, resulting in a solution. Greater amounts.
Solid liquid gas
Solute
is the substance dissolved in a solvent or the part of a chemical solution present in the smaller amount.
Soild liquid gas
Saturated solution
chemical solution containing the maximum concentration of a solute dissolved in the solvent.
Temp dependent
Reaches equilibrium
Cannot dissolve solids at bottom
Dilution
the action of making a liquid weaker by mixing in something else, or a liquid that has been made weaker in this way:
Soluble
(of a substance) able to be dissolved, especially in water:
Miscible
(of liquids) forming a homogeneous mixture when added together:
Solubility
the ability of a substance, the solute, to form a solution with another substance, the solvent.
Dissociation
Splitting ions in soultions
Electrolyte
An electrolyte is a substance that conducts electric current as a result of a dissociation into positively and negatively charged particles called ions in a aqueous solutions.
Solubility product constant (K sp )
equilibrium constant for a solid substance dissolving in an aqueous solution. It represents the level at which a solute dissolves in solution. The more soluble a substance is, the higher the Ksp K s p value it has.
Henry’s Law
at the amount of gas that is dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas above the liquid when the temperature is kept constant.
Common ion effect
The common ion effect is a phenomenon that decreases the solubility of an ionic compound by adding another compound that shares an ion with it
Colligative properties
Colligative properties refer to the physical changes that result from adding solute to a solvent.
