Aquatic Biomes Flashcards
(15 cards)
Seaweeds
Species of marine plants and algae that grow in underwater such as in the ocean, lakes.
Decomposers
Micro organisms that feed on the remains of dead aquatic organisms breaking it down into organic matter.
Scavengers
They are underwater animals that eat on the flesh of dead creatures such as crabs or fish.
Tides
The rise and fall of sea level caused by the gravitational forces exerted by the bodies ion space around us. You get low tide and high tides these all affect the marine life.
Symbiotic
It is a relationship between two different species that they both benefit from.
Filter feeders
It is a method of aquatic feeding by where the animal takes in many pieces of prey at one time. Eg blue whales, flamingos
Intertidal
Also know as the seashore, it is the area above water level at low tide and underwater at high tide. This area can include several types of habitats with various species of life such as starfish sea urchins.
Coral reef
Underwater ecosystem characterised by its reef building corals.
Photosynthesis
When green plants and micro organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. It is the main reason for the oxygen content on earth.
Algae
organisms in the ocean that have the ability to photosynthesise.
Plankton
Underwater organism that is used as a food source to many of the animals in the ocean
Estuary
Where fresh water meets salty water typically in mouth rivers form estuaries.
Spawn
The eggs and sperm that is released in the water by underwater animals. It is the way how aquatic animals reproduce
Wetland
Eco system flooded by water either permanently or seasonally, where oxygen free processes prevail
Filter
Cleaning the ocean
