Arenal Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the 3 zones of the adrenal cortex?
zona glomerulosa
zona reticularis
zona fasciculata
what does the adrenal medulla produce and release?
catecholamines (NE and E) released in times of stress
what does the zona glomerulosa produce?
mineralcorticoids (aldosterone)
-secretion regulated by renin-angiotension aldosterone system
what is the MOA of mineralcorticoids?
increase reabsorption of NA and CL and excrete H and K
what does the zona fasciculata produce?
glucocorticoids, the most potent is cortisol
-secretion regulates via the hypothal, pit, adrenal axis
what is the MOA of glucocorticoids?
anti-inflammatory
growth an suppression effects
influence levels of awareness and sleep patterns
CRH
produced and released by the hypothalamus in response to circadian rhythm, endogenous and exogenous stress
- caused ACTH release
- inhibited by cortisol
ACTH
produced and released by the anterior pituitary in response to CRH
- pulsatile response to circadian rhythm
- highest in the AM
- lowest at midnight
what is ACTH also stimulated by?
stress, acute illness, exercise, insulin induced hypoglycemia
Glucocorticoid (cortisol)
produced and released from zona fasciculata in the adrenal cortex in response to ACTH
- follows a diurnal pattern and increased in times of stress
zona reticularis
produces and secretes androgens (gonadocorticoids)
- main androgen produced is DHEA- starting material for estrogen progesterone, and testosterone
- secreted in response to ACTH
what is cushings syndrome?
group of disorders in which chronic exposure to execess glucocorticoids (cortisol) within the body
what is cushings disease?
form of cushings syndrome in which pituitary gland secretes excess ACTH
- usually caused by pituitary adenoma
