What is Arousal?
Physical and mental state of alertness/excitement varying from deep sleep to intense excitement

What is the inverted U therory?
As arousal increases so does peformance up to the optimal level but if arousal increases further performance will decrease
How much arousal do fine skills need?
Fine skills involving accuracy need low optimal level of arousal because if they’re over aroused they could be too exicited and miss the target e.g darts
How much arousal do gross skills need?
Gross skills need high optimal level of arousal because they require power and strength to perform properly e.g rugby
What somantic technique do performs use to controll their arousal levels?
Deep breathing
What is deep breathing?
Exaggerated breaths in and out, should relax top half of the body and control arousal
What is mental rehearsal?
Visulisation and imagery in their mind performing the skill
What is positive self talk?
Mental/cognitive technique whereby the performer talks to themself in their head
