Line
The element of art is used to define space, contours, and outlines, or to suggest
mass and volume.
Shape
The element of art is an enclosed space defined by other art elements. (i.e. circle, square,
triangle)
Form
The element of art appears in three-dimensional and encloses volume. (i.e. sphere, cube,
pyramid)
Space
The element of art that indicates areas between, around, above, below, or within something.
Color
The element of art with 3 properties, hue, value, and intensity.
Value
The element of art concerned with the degree of lightness (or darkness) of colors.
Texture
- The element of art which refers to the surface quality of an artwork usually perceived
through the sense of touch.
Rhythm
The principle of design that refers to a sense of movement in a work of art. It may be achieved
through repetition, alternation, or progression of an element.
Movement
The principle of design associated with rhythm that creates a sense of motion to the
viewer’s eye.
Balance
- The principle of design which refers to the arrangement of visual elements to create
stability in an artwork. (symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial)
Variety
The principle of design concerned with the inclusion of differences in the elements of a
composition to offset unity and add interest.
Emphasis
The principle of design makes one part of a work of art dominant over the other parts.
Unity
A principle of design related to the sense of wholeness that results from the successful
combination of the component elements in an artwork.
Pattern
The repetition of elements or combinations of elements in a recognizable organization
Proportion
A design principle reflecting the size relationship of parts to one another and the whole.
