ART, Contraceptions, Abortions Flashcards
(22 cards)
ART
Involves taking a hormone medication (tablet or injection), which stimulates the production of FSH
Ovulation induction
ART
Insertion of a male partner’s semen through the female’s cervix and into the uterus at or just before the time of ovulation.
Artificial Insemination (AI)
ART
Same process with AI but from donor individuals
Donor conception
ART
Mixing of oocytes and sperm in culture dishes. Fertilized eggs are incubated until they have formed at least eight cells and are then typically transferred to the woman’s uterus for implantation
Invitro fertilization (IVF)
ART
Involves the direct injection of a single sperm into each egg to achieve fertilization.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
ART
Embryos are generated through the process of IVF or ICSI and then one or two cells are removed from the embryo and are screened for a genetic condition.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)
Cessation of ovulation and menstruation
Usually occurs between the ages of 46 and 54 (after about 500 menstrual cycles)
Ovaries lose their responsiveness to FSH and LH
Menopause
Deliberate prevention of pregnancy
Contraception
Types of Contraception
Often called the rhythm method or natural family planning of birth control
Temporary Abstinence
Types of Contraception
Examples used in this method are condoms (for males) and diaphragms (for females)
Barrier Method
Types of Contraception
Used to regulate hormones to control birth
Hormonal Contraceptives
This should be prescribed as it can cause infertility
Types of Hormonal Contraceptives
Combination of synthetic estrogen and progestin that stops the release of GnRH that prevents the release of FSH and LH
Taken orally
Birth Control Pills
Types of Hormonal Contraceptives
Combination of BCP taken within 3 days after unprotected intercourse. Prevents fertilization or implantation
“Morning after” pills
Types of Contraception
Permanent prevention of gamete production or release
Tubal ligation (for females)
Vasectomy (for males)
Sterilization
Cuts and ties off each vas deferens to prevent sperm from entering the urethra
Vasectomy
Involves sealing shut or tying off a section of each oviduct to prevent eggs from travelling into the uterus
Tubal ligation
Benefits of contraceptions
- Helps plan pregnancy
- Decreases the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers
- Medication for other hormonal problems
Harmful effects of hormonal contraceptives
- Prolonged use causes hormonal imbalance
- Combination pills may cause cardiovascular diseases, stroke
Termination of pregnancy in progress
Abortion
Types of Abortion
An example of this is miscarriage
Spontaneous abortion
Types of Abortion
Drugs/medication taken within first 7 weeks of fetus (if it’s taken after 7 weeks, abortion might not occur but fetus will have a lot of complications)
Non-surgical abortion
Types of Abortion
Can cause severe complications. Process of removing a fetus directly from the womb
Surgical
