What was the myth/fantasy that the French projected onto the region of Indochina in Delaporte's, "Ideal view of Bayon in the forest, 1873"?
The French wanted to project the myth of a region that was lost, exotic, and decaying. The area "needed" western rediscover and redemption to modernize and convert this "mysterious" land. The visual trope is described as ""picturesque ruin" This can be seen in the: -addition of the railing (which likely wasn't there or actually looked like that, added for compositional appeal) -foreground ratio in composition (lots of foliage and POV that we are "peering" into the "discovery" of the temple)
30
Compare and contrast Garnier and Mouhout's contributions to the Mekong Mission/French Myth
Gaugin came with an interest in Mekong for France's "national civilizing mission", hoping to chart the Mekong river's route, items of trade, and how it linked to Cambodia/China to ultimately open up key waterway to Chinese market. Mouhot's mission was self-paid and commissioned through the Royal Society in London. Mouhot hoped to contribute to the "environment of science". There was an upshot in the French myth (that Indochina's "decline" required Western saving). Note, the vanishing khmer trope as well.
31
What viet regions made up French Indochina?
Tonkin, Annam, CochinChina, and Cambodia
32
What was the 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris? What relationship did France claim to possess with Khmer civilization?
The 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris was a reproduced "experience" of what Angkor Wat was like. It is the bass pro shop pyramid experience of Angkor Wat (3 floors of economic wares, services of the color, and history of region). France claimed to be the direct, deserving heirs of the Khmer civilization, though Angkor Wat was but a small part of the Khmer empire.
33
How did this relief reflect french colonialism?
Janniot, detail of bas-relief of Museum of Colonies, 1931 The relief experienced pushback at the expo by Indochinese students due to the depiction of "docile peasants" all in natural harmony together harvesting crops without any semblance of modernity (no technology present).
34
Who was King Mongkut and what contributions did he have to modernizing Siam
King Mongkut was a very successful ruler of Siam who directed part of Siam's modernization, especially with the Ango Thai Treaty of 1855. Mongkut is also father to Chualongkorn.
35
Who was Chulalongkorn and what contributions did he have to modernizing Siam
Chualongkorn was the son of Mongkut, he helped modernize Siam with a variety of decrees that abolished prostration, slavery, introduced the telegraph, and the first railroad in Siam. Additionally, he also educated himself through learning from Leonowens.
36
What was the Anglo Thai Treaty of 1855
The treaty was initiated by Mongkut and directed 3 changes: most favored nations clause, regulated tariffs, and to not subject foreigners to local laws (such as prostration). Ultimately, this helped to open Siam to foreign enterprise.
37
How did Thomson, King Monkgut, 1865 indicate Mongkut's modernism and Siam Agency?
In Thomson's photograph of King Mongkut, Mongkut exercises agency and modernism by his selective wardrobe choice of a French field marshal's uniform instead of expected traditional attire. By doing so, he calculates his imagery to be one of a "modern monarch" that is fluent in Western diplomacy/culture.
38
What is the irony that is overlooked in "World Geography Lesson, The king and I,1956"?
"Anna Leonowens" is trying to unteach backwards/primitive Siam usage of Traiphums when in fact, Mongkut had already made modernizing efforts in 1860 to move to "modern" maps and understanding of western cartography
39
Who were the women depicted in this photograph? What was the intention of them participating in these photos?
In G.R Lambert's, Japanese Ladies, 1890s the women depicted are karayuki-san, prostitutes from SW Japan. Using their agency to participate in photoshoots, Karayuki-san want to show their families back at home that they are okay and have found community in the other women at the port.
40
What was the issue with the verandahs and public space in Singapore?
Verandahs are a unique part of Singapore's culture in the fact that they provide route of commute, commerce, and community. The attempted regulation of public space without understanding the verandah's societal role led to major pushback.
41
What type of woman is depicted in this work? What were common issues they ran into existing in Indonesia?
In Jan Brandes, Roosje, 1779 a woman known as "Nyai" was is shown. Nyai struggled in Singapore due to a unique societal level that led them to be: -not legally recognized/protected by the state (whenever they were dismissed they lost custody of children) -racially lesser than Dutch women (competition to them)
42
What style does Beato choose to portray this work in? Who is the intended audience?
Beato chose to display works such as the depicted "Sikander Bagh Interior after Slaughter of 2000 Rebels, Lucknow, 1858" in a phantasmagoric manner. In this work, the corpse remnants of British enemies are scattered in the foreground, while the once occupied Sikander Bagh is echoed in the back. This is a celebration of British/Colonial victory over their foes.
43
How is this an example of Indian agency ,in favor for, colonial power?
"Ali Abbas, An illustrated historical album of the Rajas and Taaluqdars of Oudh, 1880" is a collection of local landholders who demonstrated loyalty to the British during the 1857 uprising. Uniquely, anonymous emblems are created for females as well.
