Arthropoda Flashcards
(11 cards)
Arthropoda Groups
Myriapods, Crustaceans, and Hexapods
Myriapods
Terrestrial Millipedes and centipedes
Less tagmatized body plan (head w/ simple eyes, three pairs of mouth parts and one pair of antennae)
Gase exchange via tracheal system
Undergo direct development w/out a larval stage
Millipedes
Type of Myriapods
Detritivores or herbivores
Have two pairs of jointed legs per body segment due to the fusion of the two segments
Centipedes
Group of Myriapods
Carnivorous, fast-moving predators, one pair of joints legs per segment. One pair of modified legs in the first trunk segment.
Crustacean Body Plan
Three tagmata (head, thorax, and abdomen)
Cephalothorax
Biramous limbs
2 pairs of antennae
Compound eyes (often stalked)
Function of Branched Limbs for Crustractians
Head has two pairs of antenaae, paired segmented mandibles, and 2 or more pairs of maxillae
Thoracic limbs used for locomotion
Abdominal limbs used for swimming, gas exchange, filter-feeding, or holding eggs
How are crustacean exoskeletons strengthened?
Biomineralization from calcium carbonate incorporated into the cuticle
Hexapods
6 legged anthropods of Class insecta and 3 Basal lineages (Protura, collembola, and diplura)
Includes evolution of wings and flight for adaptive radiation of the class
Hexapods Body Plan
Consistent tagmatization
Head with one pair of antennae and three pairs of mouthparts
Thorax w/ three pairs of jointed uniramous legs and wings
Abdomen w/out paired jointed appendages
Hexapods and Gase Exchange
Gas exhcange occurs through a tracheal system via lateral spiracles.
Most hexapods lack O2 transporting respiratory pigments
Insect Life Cycle
Many insects undergo metamorphosis (indirect development)
Juveniles are called nymphs and molt before reaching full size.
Larval stage/pupal stage is maggots, grubs, or caterpillors.
All insects copulate
