What is the literal and religious meaning of Jihad?
The literal meaning means struggle. In religious terms Jihad refers to struggle in the way of Allah to establish righteousness and to eradicate evil.
What Hadith talks about the types of Jihad?
“Whosoever sees an evil among you should change it with his hand, if he can not so with his tongue and if he can not so with his heart and this is the weakest of faith”
What are the three kinds of Jihad?
Spiritual Jihad, Mental Jihad and Physical Jihad.
What is spiritual Jihad?
to fight against the evil force present in oneself, against our Nafs Ammarah.
What are the two Nafs in us?
Nafs Ammarah- orders us to do sin
Nafs Lawwamah- makes us feel guilty when we do something wrong.
What is our Nafs Ammarah called when it is trained?
Nafs-e-Mutmainnah
What verse tells us that Satan is our enemy?
“Indeed Satan is your obvious enemy”
What are the two negative forces in us?
Nafs Ammarah and Satan
What is mental Jihad known as?
Daawah
What are the two types of mental Jihad?
Jihad bil Lisan (Jihad of Tongue) and Jihad bil Qalam (Jihad of Pen)
How did the Prophet do mental Jihad and how can we do mental Jihad?
The Prophet only did mental Jihad when he was in Makkah as physical Jihad wasn’t allowed. He used to prove the oneness of Allah with logical arguments and rejected idol worshipping.
All Muslims who are busy to spread the work of Allah through their speeches or by writing books and articles are busy in Jihad. Muslims should use the latest forms of communication and media to spread the word of Islam.
What is physical Jihad?
To make an armed struggle in the way of Allah to defend Islam and Muslims or to remove hurdles from the peaceful spreading of Islam.
What verse mentions permission for physical Jihad?
“Permission to fight is given to those who have been fought against as they have been wronged”
What is the method of physical Jihad?
1- Invite them to Islam, or to pay Jizya in return of religious freedom and protection of their life and property.
2-If they reject, then Jihad will be done.
What are the ethics of armed struggle?
-Do not kill women, children or aged people.
-Do not harm fruit-bearing trees or burn fields.
-Do not destroy places of worship.
-Protect religious leaders like Rabbis, priests and monks.
-Do not mutilate dead bodies.
-Treat captives with decency.
-Do not commit treachery or deviate from the right path.
-Do not wage war to seize land or to expand territory.
-Do not poison wells or food stocks.
What are the conditions of physical Jihad?
1-Has to be decided by the state and not by individual volunteers.
2-Those who go for Jihad should be free and independent Muslims and are required to have a collective social system which is governed by an Ameer or Chief.
3- Muslims should have sufficient force to counter the enemy.
