Q
What is a Cartilaginous joint?
A
Slight movement ( malleable tissue between bones ) Eg. Pubic symphysis, ribs/sturnum (when young)
1
Q
What is a Fibrous joint?
A
No movement ( sealed ) Eg. Skull sutures, teeth sockets
2
Q
What is a Synovial joint?
A
Very moveable ( classified by the axes of movement permitted ) (space between bones allows lots of movement-lubricating fluid) Eg. Shoulder joint, knee joint, wrist joints, etc.
3
Q
How many Synovial joint classifications are there?
A
6
4
Q
What are the Synovial joint classifications?
A
- Ball & Socket
- Ellipsoid
- Saddle
- Pivot
- Hinge
- Gliding/Plane
5
Q
Ball & Socket?
A
MULTIAXIAL- shoulder and hip joints
-smooth, allows for easy movement
6
Q
Ellipsoid?
A
BIAXIAL- wrist
- smaller ball and socket
- egg shaped
- can only rock back and forth in 2 directions
7
Q
Saddle?
A
BIAXIAL- base of thumb joint
- think of a rider on a horse
- allows for movement in 2 planes (rocking back and forth)
8
Q
Pivot?
A
UNIAXIAL- neck/head rotation
-only rotation possible around one axis
9
Q
Hinge?
A
UNIAXIAL- elbow joint
- movements are limited to flexion & extension
- like a hinge of a door
10
Q
Gliding/Plane?
A
MULTIAXIAL- flat surfaces
- gliding and twisting
- along surfaces of all axes
