Jan(Velvet) Bruegel
Studied under Titian. Religious painter. Expressionistic style employed flamelike lines, bright highlights, and belonged/distorted figures. Used vibrant colors against grays and earthy tones for dramatic effect.
El Graco
Italian baroque Painter. painted religious works/portraits. Used low society models for his works. Painted partly illuminated figures against a dark background.
Carvaggio
Foremost Flemish painter of the 17th century. Taught many artists, including Van Eyke. Added finishing touches to artworks. Used bold colors, much detail, and a sense of movement/liveliness.

Spain’s greatest Baroque artist. Painted Christ and the Pilgrims of Emmause, Borrachos, and Joseph’s coat. (Also did a series of dwarves)
Velazquez.
Dutch painter, portraitist, etcher, landscape painter, and draftsman. Paintings are dark and the main focus is lit. Painted The night Watch, Bathsheba, and Three Crosses.

Dutch landscape master/foremost colorist. Used tiles of contrasting colors, such as black and white, and mainly painted woman at work. Painted The Milkmaid.
Vermeer
English portraitist and landscape artist. Pastoral backgrounds and fancily dressed ladies and gentlemen. Painted Peasant Girl Gathering Sticks.
Thomas Gainsborough
Romantic landscape painter, watercolorist, and printmaker. Founded Impressionism. Known as “The Painter of Light” (first of that name).
William Turner
French painter and draftsman. Painted historical works and book illustrations. Painted Death of Sardanapalus and Massacre at Chios.
Delacroix
Paints beautiful, enchanting paintings of woman and children of a bygone era. Calming, wistful, nostalgic. Used mythological themes.
Bouguereau
French painter who painted things that caused public outcry. Drew what the eye saw at a glance (no transitional tones).
Manet
French painter and sculptor. Gifted draftsman and portraitist. Combined classical art and impressionism. Painted woman, ballet dancers, people in motion, etc. Off-center subjects/unusual angles.
Degas
American lithographer, magazine illustrator, landscape, marine, and genre painter. War correspondent. Portrays real, daily life.
