give six of Ralph Goings’ influences
pop art inspired him to paint mundane objects (shown in the everyday subject matter of “Quartet”). as a photorealist he was disappointed by pop art’s careless quality and wanted to replicate real life as closely as possible. grew up in working-class American family - paintings comment on working class America/consumer culture (subject matter - trucks, food). he was inspired by magazines and advertisement photography and became excited by the idea of replicating the colour + texture of photographs. the rising American “Diner” culture caused by post-war affluence heavily influenced the subject matter of his paintings (set in diners).
give six of Peter Chang’s influences
grew up in Liverpool in the 1960s - style of his work draws from psychedelic ‘swinging sixties’ Liverpool era (shown in use of vibrant colour + pattern). he was also inspired by Liverpool street signs - this can be seen in his use of red and yellow. inspired by science fiction - some of his sculptures look almost alien. marine life - much of his work hints towards sealife - e.g. pink + purple stripes of Powerhouse. pop art - use of bright colours + bold pattern. everyday life ( + the environment) - he used recycled objects such as toothbrushes + old pens in his sculpture to comment on modern throwaway culture.
