- Rebuilt multiple times: built over one/ succeeded it. Dedicated to two dieties→ one is the deity of water and rain, the other is associated with warfare, fire, and the sun → aquired power and wealth through warfare.

*The Mass of St. Gregory, 1539. Conquest Era.
- Commissioned for the pope– recognizing the papal bull= decreed, Armenian people, “…rational human beings, complete with souls,” and called an end to their enslavement.
- Miraculous vision of Christ→ Christ body became bread. Central idea to Transubstantiate→ represents the death and suffering of Christ.
- When the Spanish established themselves as New Spain→ trained indigenous peoples in schools about European artistic conventions → copying prints of European paintings
- Material of featherwork enhanced the spiritual transcendence of the subject. Iridescents suggest divine light, reinforcing Christ as the light of the world.

- Bears were deeply revered creatures who were associated with ferocity, tenacity, and power→ worn by men. Difficulty obtaining material only added to the prestige to the object.
- Beaded otter bely→ linked to fundamental aspects of the Pawnee religion→ animal lodge ceremonialism: animal had particular attributes and powers Pawnee people drew upon→ incorporates cedar and tobacco– essential to the objects activation and power= protected the weak and their communities from enemies, sickness, and disease.

*Maria Martinez, Black-on-Black ceramic vessel, c. 1938, blackware ceramic, San Ildefonso Pueblo
- Turned vessels from storage, food production, and ceremonial and brought it into an aesthetic light. Introduced traditional Pueblo art forms and motifs to a new, non-native audience.
- Ceramic production was time consuming→ inspired by pottery shards by ancestral sites.
- Designs are highly abstracted with geometric and linear shapes= Bold geometric signs associated with the contemporary art deco movement→ increase interest from a non-native audience.
