Ascending & Descending Tracts Flashcards
(19 cards)
How many order neurons do ascending tracts have
Individual to each tract
How many order neurons does descending pathways have
2
What information does ascending tracts carry
Conscious & unconscious Sensory information from the periphery
Do the ascending tracts cross over
Yes
They cross over to the opposite side so they supply the contralateral side of the brain
Name the 4 conscious ascending spinal tracts
Antero -lateral system = anterior & lateral spinothalamic tracts
Dorsal column medial lemniscuc tract
Spinoreticular tractv
Spinotectal tract
Name the 4 unconscious ascending tracts
Dorsal Spinocerebellar
Ventral Spinocerebellar
Cúneo-cerebellar
Rosal Spinocerebellar
What sensory info does the dorsal column transmit
Vibration
Proprioception
Two point discrimination
Name the 2 parts of the dorsal column
Fasciculus Gracillis = supplies sensation to lower limbs
Fasciculus Cuneatus = upper limb sensation
Where does the dorsal column decussate at
Crosses at the medulla
Where does the spinothalamic system decussate
Crosses at the soinal cord after going in via the dorsal horn & synapsing in the grey matter
What sensory information do each of the spinothalamic tracts do
Anterior spinothalamic tract = crude touch & pressure
Lateral spinothalamic tract = pain & temp
Where are the 3 order neurons found in ascending tracts
First order neurons = inside the dorsal root ganglion
Sending order neuron = spinal cord or brain stem
Third order neuron = thalamus
What is a pyramidal tracts
Crosses at the medulla
What is an extra pyramidal motor tract
Doesn’t cross at the medulla
Name the 2 pyramidal motor tracts
Corticospinal
Corticobulbar
Name the 4 extra pyramidal tracts
Reticulasoinal
Vestibulospinal
Tectospinal
Rubrospinal
Name the 2 corticospinal tracts
Lateral corticospinal tract
Anterior corticospinal tract
Where do each of the corticospinal tracts decussate
Lateral corticospinal tract = decussate in the medulla
Anterior corticospinal tract = decussate in the spinal cord
Where are the 3 order neurons located in a descending tract
All arranges in a linear chain
1st = travels from the cerebral cortex/brainstem & synapses in anterior grey horn
2nd = spinal cord or brainstem
3rd v located in anterior grey horn at the same spinal cord level & leave the soinal cord through the ventral horn
