Asch's research Flashcards
What did Asch do with group size?
Asch increased the size of the group by adding more confederates. Conformity increased with group size but only up to a point
What did Asch do with Unanimity?
The extent to which the group agrees. When the confederates were unanimous there was the greatest amount of conformity with the naive participants
What did Asch do with task difficulty?
Conformity increases when the the task becomes harder. Participants assume the majority is right
What did Soloman Asch (1951, 1955)
Showed two white cards at a time. One with a standard line and one with three comparison lines. One of the three lines were equal length to the standard line. Participants were asked to match the correct lines
Who participated in Asch’s study?
123 American male graduates
Individually in a group with 6 - 8 confederates
What were Asch’s findings?
Naive participants gave the wrong answer 36.8% of the time
25% did not conform on any of the trials
When interviewed afterwards participants said they conformed because of social pressure
