The height above sea level

What happens when tectonic plates move?
When two plates come together = mountains are formed
When two plates shift next to each other = earthquake occurs
What is a topographic map and the benefits of it?
A topographic map uses rings to show elevation. The higher the elevation, the smaller the rings. This could help hikers, pilots, rescue teams, military, architectural engineers get through narrow values or study routes.
What is a physical map and the benefits of it?
Physical maps use color to show elevation.
More general / regions. To see where people live, tourists to find a general area to go visit, meteorologists to start to see climate patterns
What does arable land mean?
The land that is livable.
How do you find population density?
The number of people per square mile/km. The entire population is divided by how many sq. mile/km there is
What is population distribution?
Where the people live.
In Japan, the population is distributed along the coast
*In MI, the population (a large part) is in SE Michigan
What is densely and sparsely populated?
Dense=crowded
Sparse=spread out
What is physiologic population density?
The number of people per square mile/km on arable land.
What is human footprint?
The negative impact that large numbers of people make.
ex.) Deforestation, air and water pollution etc.
What is government?
a system that sets up and enforces a society’s (community, country, school, team etc) laws and institutions
What is direct democracy and the pros and cons of it?
all people get to debate and vote on every issue
+Everyone has a voice
-Not efficient / arguments / long time (too many cooks in the kitchen)
-Too many people → varied opinions
What is representative democracy and the pros and cons of it?
people vote for someone who represents their ideas/beliefs and they make decisions based on that
+more efficient
+you are choosing someone who will fight for what you believe in (in theory)
-sometimes representatives do not make good on their promises
What are the three ways a dictator can get into power?
Born into it, Voted in, Overthrow previous dictator.
What is a dictator?
A person who rules everything and has complete control over a society.
What are some examples of characteristics of a dictator?
False promises
False hope
Manipulative
Charismatic/charming
Take all the wealth and resources
Protected/surrounded by military
Overthrew previous ruler (coup)
Kill/hurt/jail anyone who disagrees
Paranoid
Self-serving, narcissistic
Psychopath
Power-hungry
What is a constituent?
A voter.
What is a coup?
When someone or a group of people overthrow and kill a previous dictator, and go into power
What is the DMZ and its purpose?
The demilitarized zone is a 150 mile border guarded by military between South and North Korea there to preserve the peace between both sides and avoid military confrontations.

1910- Korea colonized by Japan
1945- Japan kicked out of Korea at the end of WWII
Korea split - North = Soviet control / South = USA control
1947- Start of the Cold War
