Asian bodywork therapy
Treatment of the body, mind and spirit through pressure and manipulation.
Life force
Binds all portions of the universe together. Called Ki, Qi, Chi or prana.
Three branches of Chinese medicine
Bodywork, acupuncture, herbology.
Shiatsu
Japanese accupressure technique which assists in the flow of ki. Utilizes the same points as accupuncture.
Tai Ji
Yin-Yang symbol
Meridians
The pathways of energy through the body. Bilaterally symmetrical and join together at the distal ends of the extremities.
Number of primary meridians
12, each associated with 12 body systems. 6 yin and 6 yang.
When do flare ups occur according to Chinese medicine?
At either the time of least activity or most activity of that particular organ.
Tsubos
Points along meridians at which energy concentrates and surfaces as vortices of Ki.
Cun
Measurement used in locating tsubos. Width of the client’s thumb knuckle.
Kyo
Empty, yin, depleted.
Jitsu
Full, yang, excess ki
5 phases or elements
Woord, fire, earth, metal, water.
What can you observe to detect imbalanced energy?
Appearance, behaviours, body constitution, posture, gait, mannerisms and movement.
Zen
State of meditation or contemplation. Allows the practitioner to perceive Ki.
Ayuraveda
Indian traditional healing modality.
Components of ayurveda
Dietary modification, massage, yoga, herbal practices.
Components of the cosmos according to ayurveda
Earth, air, fire, water and ether.
What is ether in ayurveda?
A perfect blend or earth, air, fire and water.
Nadi
Channel through which energy flows. Begin at the central channel of the chakras, then branches out.
Ama
Cause of disease according to ayurveda. Caused by decreased enzyme activity.
Means of detecting ama
Coating on the tongue, turbid or smelly urine, undigested food in the feces, body odour and gas.
Chakra system
Means wheel or circle. Functions to receive, process and distribute energy to keep health in balance.
