How does Yang Deficiency present?
Qi deficiency with cold symptoms
If you see cold symptoms what is it?
Yang Deficiency (cold w/ weak, deficient sx) or Excess Cold (cold w/ intense sx)
How does Yin deficiency present?
Blood deficiency with heat symptoms
If you see heat symptoms what is it?
Yin Deficiency (heat w/ weak, deficient sx) or Excess Heat (heat w/ intense sx)
Wind cold?
Wind Cold • Aversion to cold and/or wind • SNEEZING • COUGH • Runny nose with white d/c • Slight or no fever • Occipital stiffness and aches • No sweating (Wei Qi closes pores to protect) or thirst • Pulses: Floating, tight (cold contracts), slow pulse • Tongue: Thin, white coat
Wind heat?
Wind Heat • Aversion to cold (Wei qi warms so an impairment makes it susceptible to cold) • SNEEZING • COUGH • Runny nose with slight yellow mucus • Slight sweating • Itchy and sore throat • Swollen tonsils • Thirst • Pulses: Floating and rapid • Tongue: Red on tip or sides, thin white coat
Wind water?
Wind Water • Aversion to wind • SUDDEN SWELLING OF THE EYES AND FACE • Spreads to the rest of the body • Bright-shiny complexion • Scanty and clear urination • Fever • Cough • Mild shortness of breath • Pulses: Floating and slippery • Tongue: sticky, white coating
What organs can have Qi deficiency?
Lung Heart Spleen Kidney Stomach as well
Signs of Qi deficiency?
- Fatigue (deficiency sx, not specific to Qi)
- Dizziness (deficiency sx, not specific to Qi)
- SPONTANEOUS SWEATING
- APATHY
- Pale face
- Weak immune system (frequent colds)
- Weak pulse
- Pale tongue
Lung Qi Deficiency?
Causes
• Chronic cough or asthma
• Insufficiency of Qi
production
Signs • FEEBLE COUGH or Asthma • SOB, WORSE ON EXERTION • Low and/or hoarse voice • Fatigue • Spontaneous sweating • Dizziness • Aversion to cold • Pale face • Watery or thin/clear sputum • Catches colds easily • Pale tongue with a thin, white coating • Weak or empty (weak on all three levels) pulses especially right cun position
Spleen Qi Deficiency?
Causes • Poor nutrition • Irregular habits • Raw, cold foods • Over thinking** • Prolonged exposure to dampness** • Chronic disease
Signs • POOR APPETITE • ABDOMINAL DISTENSION WORSE AFTER EATING • LOOSE STOOLS • Fatigue • Spontaneous sweating • Apathy • Pale face • Anorexia • Emaciation • Weakness of the limbs • Pale tongue with a thin, white coating • Weak or empty pulses (esp Guan - middle position on right side)
Stomach Qi Deficiency?
Causes • Irregular diet and eating habits • Under eating (dieting) • Chronic disease
Signs • EPIGASTRIC DISCOMFORT • Lack of appetite (Usually associated with Spleen - to DDx from Spleen SEE TASTE • ABSENT TASTE SENSATION • Fatigue in the morning) • Weakness of the limbs • Loose stools • Tongue • Pale • Pulses • Empty (esp. in right guan)
Heart Qi Deficiency?
DDx from Lung Qi Def - Ht has palpitations, Lung has cough and asthma Causes • Poor constitution • Prolonged illnesses or severe diseases • Congenital deficiency or senility
Signs • PALPITATIONS • SOB, worse on exertion • Low and/or hoarse voice • Fatigue • Spontaneous sweating • Dizziness • Pale face • Watery or thin/clear sputum • Catches colds easily • Pale tongue with a thin, white coating • Weak or empty pulses (esp on LEFT CUN SIDE AS OPPOSED TO RIGHT WITH LUNG)
Kidney Qi Deficiency / Kidney Qi Not FIRM?
Kd responsible for 2 lower orifices and pelvic floor - if not firm, allows for escape -> incontinence, premature ejaculations, leucorrhea, nocturnal emissions
Causes • Old age • Early lack of development of kidney Qi • Excessive sexual activity • Prolonged illness
Signs • Pale face • Poor hearing • SORE BACK AND KNEES • Frequent, clear urine • Frequent dribbling of urine • ENURESIS • INCONTINENCE • REMARKABLE NOCTURIA (2-3x / night) • Nocturnal emissions (male) • Premature ejaculations • Clearing leukorrhea • Miscarriages • Tongue Pale • Pulse Deep and weak (Right side Chi position as opposed to Kd Yin issue which is left side)
Yang Deficiency?
FEELING COLD SENSATIONS but NOT COLD TO THE TOUCH (sign of deficiency - DDx from Excess Cold in which feels Cold sensation and Cold to the touch)
• Cold extremities
• Poor circulation
• Fatigue
• Pale face
• EDEMA (Yang is movement - here lack movement - so pooling of fluid)
• Slow pulse
• Swollen/flabby (relatively more Yin, hence more substance), pale tongue with moist coat (DDx w/ Damp Excess tongue - swollen tongue w/ sticky coat)
• Loose stools with UNDIGESTED FOOD
