Antebellum south
Economy was dependent on extreme inequality , with aristocratic landowners at the top of the hierarchy, and at the bottom black slaves on farms, plantations and in domestic work.
By mid-20th century, the antebellum way of life was long dead, but many remembered it both with a romantic nostalgia as a charming time of tradition, nobility and honour, and also with repulsion and shame
American civil war
The us civil war 1861-1865 = north vs south states centred on issue of slavery, forms of government and industry
After the war, the agricultural south experience economic decline as a result of the abolition of slavery, the source of its economic prosperity, many landowner fell into debt and ruin
Southern belles
Expected to marry respectable young men and become ladies of society dedicated to the family and community
Archetype is characterised by southern hospitality, a cultivation of beauty,and a flirtatious yet chaste demeanour
Great Depression 1929
Wall Street crash- economic decline and inflation. Unemployment was high and the 1930s were characterised as a period of deprivation and decline
Ww2 industrialisation
Led to economic boom-the USA was a military and industrial superpower.
Led to greater social mobility as many were lifted out of poverty into prosperous working class, and many formerly in the working classes became middle class.
New Orleans mid 1990s
Melting pot of diversity, population was heavily made up of immigrant communities.
The french quarter [location of Elysian fields] in particular experienced a lot of European immigration, and was especially densely populated
