Aspects Surrounding Companies / Organisations That Can Have Significant Environmental Aspects Flashcards

1
Q

The first of these aspects is energy and it can be broken down into two main groups what are they?

A
  1. Heating and cooling ( could easily be influenced through proper insulation and good layered windows . Also energy for these could be tapped from efficient sources like the district heating system)
  2. Electricity consumption

Q

It is important to understand who pays what regarding energy in an organization. Why is that so ?

A

The building could be rented and the lord could be in charge of paying the energy costs . It could also be split b/n two companies / organizations .

Q

What is an energy declaration and why is it useful?

A

Energy declaration is a document that provides information about the energy performance of a building. It useful because it provides information about the consumption and efficiency of a building . In Sweden such information can be found at the Swedish energy agency , Boverket .

Q

What more can you say about heating and cooling ?

A

These can easily be influenced by the installation of good insulation, good layered windows without leaks . Choosing efficient heating or cooling systems eg. Oil furnaces can be replaced with district heating or cooling system ( which is essentially green heating because of reduced emissions).

Q

What could be a useful techno in comparing energy consumption?

A

Comparing energy consumption can be done by using the consumption per square meter of the building to be compared to other buildings of similar size and usage patterns .

7
Q

How can energy consumption be reduced ?

A

It can start with using low energy light bulbs , setting lights to automatically turn off/on . Standby power consumption from other appliance can add to the building!s energy consumption and should have a software that can switch appliances off after being on standby for over a period of time.
2. Low energy equipment such as laptops, printers and copy machines can be purchased . Old refrigerators should be swapped out for newer ones .

Q

Why must life cycle costing be used when purchasing items for organizations?

A

This is a good way to ascertain the total cost of a product through out its entire lifecycle from use , to maintenance costs to disposal costs. This can help inform purchasing decisions as cheaper products may cost twice as much during its life cycle .

Q

Transportation in organizations can be split into two parts what are the two parts?

A
  1. Travel
  2. Transportation of goods

All transport must be quantified in CO2

Q

What can be said about travel?

A

This includes company cars and other journeys. Here if you want reduce environmental impacts in employee personal travel to and from work it is not a good idea to pay for travel because you would have to pay taxes . However you can promote sustainable transport modes by using incentives . Eg some companies allow employees who cycle to start work 15mins later .

The company can also invest in electric vehicles to be used by employees for site visit and other company related activities .

You could also invest in eco driving courses to teach employees how to efficiently use their vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

Q

What can be said about transport of goods ?

A

Companies must try to own their trucks so they can make better choices of cars to purchase.
Truck drivers can undergo eco driving courses.
Choose other modes for transporting large quantities of goods eg. Train/ship over roads .
2. Improving on logistics such improving delivery routes and better management of warehouses can reduce the need for excess transport .

Q

What are some suggestions to reduce the orgs transportation impact on the environment

A
  1. Zoom meetings instead physical travel
  2. Tele working .
  3. Travel policy ( where distances that can be reached via trains should not flown to )
  4. Car pooling
  5. Eco driving courses
  6. Putting requirements on suppliers.

Q

What are some basic factors to consider about chemicals and their use in an organization?

A
  1. Start buy making an inventory list to keep track of all chemicals.
  2. Make sure you have all MSDS for all chemicals being used. These sheets provide information on the chemical components, hazards, safe handling and storage of the chemicals.
  3. Practice safe handling and storages at all times .
  4. There should be a detailed list of chemicals being used using the PRIO guidelines( can help you manage chemicals and assess their risk).
  5. Be well informed of all laws regarding the use and sale of chemicals being used.

Q

What are the proper ways to store chemicals ?

A
  1. Stored in locked cabinets with forced ventilation.
  2. If necessary store in special refrigerators and label the of the fridge.
  3. Certain chemicals must not be stored together to prevent dangerous reactions.
  4. The storage space should always be neat and tidy
  5. All bottles should be correctly labeled ( prevent accidents and helps with easy identification).
  6. Practice proper waste disposal techniques of chemicals
  7. Be well informed or aware of all legislation regarding the use and sale of chemicals relevant to the organization

16
Q

Is this statement true or false : In the list of chemicals table there must always be a column for h and p statement (hazardous and precautionary statement)

A

True

17
Q

Where are you most likely to find refrigerants ?

A

On cooling devices/systems , heat pumps

18
Q

There is CO2 leakage checking schedule for machines with different CO2 equivalent?

A

If it has less than 5 tons there is no mandatory control.
If it 5 or more tons then leakage must be checked once every 12 months.
If it is 50 or more tons then it must be checked once every 6 months.
If it is 500 or more tons then it must be checked once every 3 months.

19
Q

Is this statement true or false : all machinery with CO2 equivalent of more than 14tons must be reported to local authorities before installation and then once a year after that .

A

True .

20
Q

What do you do about refrigerants?

A
  1. You find them all.
  2. Fill in the table to be able to easily keep track.
  3. Check if the pay are in compliance with legislations .
  4. Suggest phasing out .
21
Q

What can you say about commodities and consumables ?

A

You have to figure out what C/O consumables and commodities are .
It could be water, various kinds of materials such as paper, food items

22
Q

How can you work in the area of commodities and consumables

A

Water : suggest low flow taps and toilets , find out how Mitch water is being used in productions processes . Find out the water foot print of other commodities.
Materials : find out and phase out toxic materials, buy eco labeled products , print on both sides of paper .
Food : buy KRAV labeled products ( food without artificial pesticides), buy fairtrade products ( supports farmers) , buy climate labeled food .

Always use a life cycle perspective much easier !

23
Q

What is the waste management hierarchy ?

A

Prevention-minimization-reuse-recycling-energy recovery(incineration)- disposal (landfill)

24
Q

What can you work with in purchasing requirements on suppliers and entrepreneurs?

A

Hear always make sure that you are practicing sustainable purchasing (green public procurement). This not only benefits the company but also the society as a whole and minimizes env. Impacts.

By following EU GPP criteria and the Swedish national agency for public procurement ( offers criteria in 3 levels: core , advanced and spearhead)you should be able to purchase sustainably .

25
Q

In assessing env aspects what is there to consider ?

A

Quantification should always be the basis.
Can compare aspect in CO2 / CO2 equivalent .
Very pragmatic
Should transparent and repeatable

26
Q

Is this statement true or false: the significant env. Aspects serves as the basis for the environmental policy.

A

True
