Assessment Procedures Flashcards
(19 cards)
What do we assess in a comprehensive oral exam?
- Hard Tissue
- Respiration and oral resting posture
- Soft tissure
- Oral sensation
- Stabilization and movement
What activities are involved in speech?
- Tactile
- Spatial
- movement above horizontal midline
- movement around the typical resting posture
What other factors are involved in speech?
- Muscle tonicity
- Endurance
- Precision and Dexterity
- Invilves small movements
- Requires jaw stabilization
- Involves differentiated movement
The “typical” face is….
- 5 eyes wide
- qual thirds
Hard Tissue
- over all cavity size and shape
- size and shape affect how speech is projected
- oralphyrengeal
Mesocephalic
5 eyes wide and equal thirds
Dolicocephalic
longer bottom third of face (longer jaw/chin)
Brachycephalic
wider than 5 eyes wide (linebacker face)
Facial Profiles
- Straight
- Concave
- Convex
Concave
mandible is back some
recessive growth of mandible
tongue sits postieror
Convex
Mandilble projects out a little
excessive growth of maxilla
tongue sits anterior
Dentition (Angle’s Classification)
Normal
top 1st molar relates to bottom first molar
Dentition
Class I
top cusp relates to bottom groove
Dentition
Class II
top cusp relates to front of bottom groove
Dentition
Class III
top cusp relates to behind bottom groove
Malocclusion
Overjet (associated w/class I or II)
- Horizontal plane: front teeth should be 1-3mm from lower teeth
- overjet is when front teeth are more than 3mm from lower teeth
- skeletal overjet- jaw involved
Functional overjet
class I but front teeth are tapping out (can be from excessive paci, thumb sucking, sippy cup use)
Overbit
Anterior Open Bite
Crossbite
vertical malocclusion in which front teeth overlap bottom teeth
Anterior Open Bite: has an impact on labial closure
Crossbit: impacts the platal vault
Hard Palate
High palate
Wide vault
Narrow
High: some are higher than others but only too high when tongue can not reach it
Wide: may influence stabilization, may make speech sound “slushy”
Narrow: may limit the ability of the tongue to move, limited operating space
