Astronomy Flashcards
(14 cards)
What objects are found within our solar system?
The sun, 8 planets, stars, dwarf planets, moons
What is the earths orbit?
????
What is Earth’s orbital period?
365.25 days
What is earth’s rotation?
Earth rotates on its axis from west to east, and the Sun and the Moon appear to move from east to west across the sky.
What is earth’s revolution?
The earth revolves around the sun.
What is a light year?
The distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1 year (365.25 days)
What are the different star types and colours?
O-, B-, and A-type stars appear blue to bluish white to white. (hottest)
F- and G-type stars give off faint to rich yellow hues. K- and M-type stars appear orange to red-orange. (least hot)
What are the characteristics of stars?
Brightness, colour, temperature, composition and mass.
Do stars produce heat?
Yes. A star, like our Sun converts 4 million tons of its material into heat and light.
What is an astronomical unit? How is it used?
Astronomical units, abbreviated AU, are a used to measure distance within our solar system.
What is the organization of our solar system?
??????
What are characteristics of the Sun?
Its 4.5 billion-year-old, yellow, dwarf star, hot glowing ball of hydrogen and helium, at the center of our solar system, about 150 million kilometers from Earth.
What is the solar nebula theory?
The solar nebular hypothesis describes that it is believed that the sun, planets, moons, and asteroids were formed around the same time around 4.5 billion years ago from a nebula.
What is the big bang theory?
The big bang is a theory of the way our universe began. It is the idea that the universe began as just a single point, then expanded and stretched to grow as large as it is right now.
