Light a bunsen burner and work near the lit Bunsen throughout the practical, the warm air current will create an updraft that reduces the risk of air-borne microbes contaminating your agar.

Use sterile equipment by autoclaving (heating at high temperature and pressure)- using bunsen burner

(sterile metal loop/glass spreaders)

flame the neck of the bottle containing bacteria

open lid of Petri dish as little as possible

use sterile spreader to evenly distribute e.g bacteria
