AT1 2025 - Muscles, Bones, Joints and Systems Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is an agonist muscle?
It is the prime mover or it causes the movements. (E.g. The biceps in a bicep curl)
What is an antagonist muscle?
It is muscle that opposes the action of another muscle, providing resistance. (E.g. The triceps in a bicep curl)
What is an isometric contraction?
When a muscle contracts but doesn’t change in length. (Wallsit)
What is an isotonic contraction?
The muscle contracts but there is a change in the muscle length - it could be short or long. (Bicep curl)
What are the tow types of isotonic muscle contractions and what do they do?
Eccentric (Muscle lengthens)
Concentric (Muscle shortens)
What is an isokinetic contraction?
There is a change in length, however tension remains constant.
What is circumduction?
The act of moving your joint in a cone shape (not rotation)
What do the arteries do?
They take blood away from the heart.
What do veins do?
Take blood back to the heart.
What is the purpose of resipration?
To deliver oxygen to the cells and remove carbon dioxide from them.
What is thermoregulation?
The circulatory system transports heat (to warm and cool the body).
What is hypothalamis?
It acts as a thermostat of the body and gets the body to the right temp when needed. (E.g. if the body is too hot, sweat will be produced).
What are the 2 branches that come off of the trachea?
The bronchi.
What are the little spines that come off of the bronchi?
Bronchioles
What are the tiny sacs that come off of the bronchioles?
The alveoli
Does the larynx or pharynx come first?
Pharynx
What happens to the air when it is being passed to the lungs?
It is filtered out and moistured. Little hairs called cillia help filter out any dust or bacteria that could be harmful to your body.
