Atmosphere Flashcards
(4 cards)
Describe the Hadley Cell
-warm air rises at the equator creating low pressure - causing more rain
-the air splits in the atmosphere and moves towards the poles
-air cools and sinks at the tropics at 30 degrees
-the North East Trade winds move air back to the equator completing the hadley cell
describe the ferrel cell
-the ferrel cell is located between 30 degrees N and 60 degrees N
-powered by the polar and hadley cell
-transfers air between thr Hadley and Polar cells forming the westerlies
explain global heat budget
-insolation enters earths atmosphere and can be absorbed, reflected or passed through the atmosphere
-About 52% of this reaches the earths surface
-As the rest is absorbed by the atmosphere, clouds, water vapour, gases and dust or is reflected by the earths surface then the insolation
-If it passes through the atmosphere then it reaches the earths surface
describe the polar cell
-located between 60 degrees latitude and up
-at the poles the air is cold & dense causing it to descend, this creates a high pressure zone at the earths surface causing it to be dry like a desert
-the air leaves the poles and starts to warm and rise, as it rises it begins to cool and condense returning to the poles at high pressure
-the air is deflected back towards the Ferrel cells and the process continues
