Atmosphere + Moon Phases Flashcards
(22 cards)
What happens to pressure in the atmosphere?
The Pressure decreases as you go up.
Major Gases in atmosphere…
Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%), Argon (0.93%), CO2 (0.03%)
What is a variable gas?
A gas which % changes throughout the atmosphere.
What is a fixed / permanent gas?
A gas which % stays the same throughout the atmosphere.
Example of fixed and variable gases…
Variable - CO2, Ozone, Water Vapor
Fixed - Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon
What happens to temps throughout layers of the atmosphere? - Sigma Graph
Vary - Cool to Warm to Cool to Warm
What is a pause?
It is when the temps level out - Tropopause, Stratopause, and mesopause.
Roots for each layer of atmosphere
Tropo - Change, Strato - Layers, Meso - Middle, Iono - Charged Particle, Thermo - Heat, Exo - Outside
Where all weather is found?
Troposphere
Earth’s diameter & Circumference…
12,786 km & 7,926 miles
40,075 km & 24, 856 miles
What are light shows called? How do they happen?
Aurora Borealis - in the Northern Hemisphere
Aurora Australis - in the Southern Hemisphere
When a stream of ions interact with solar wind and hit the magnetosphere and travel along field lines.
How many satellites are there?
Approximately 4,000
What layer are satellites in?
The exosphere
What are meteoroids?
All broken rock and metal in the mesosphere
What are meteors?
The stage after meteoroids where the rock and metal burns
What are meteorites?
The remains/particles of a meteor - Meteorites are what hits Earth
What is CFC and what does it do to the Ozone layer?
Chlorofluorocarbon Cells and they depletes molecules in the ozone layer.
What are the phases of the moon in order?
New Moon, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, waning crescent
What side of the moon is illuminated when there is a waxing moon and waning moon.
Waxing - right side
Waning - left side
Coldest and Hottest Layer?
Coldest - mesosphere
Hottest - thermosphere
Thickest and Thinnest Layer?
Thickest - exosphere
Thinnest - troposphere
Most and least dense layer of atmosphere?
Least Dense - exosphere
Most dense - troposphere
