9
Q

why is the amount of methane in the air increasing

A

larger amounts of cattle being farmed which release methane in their flatulence

10
Q

why is the amount of water vapour in the air increasing

A

more water evaporating from oceans as the earths temp increases

11
Q

what may happen if the earths temp increases

A

melting of polar ice caps which will lead to a rise in sea level and the flooding of low lying land
this will cause destruction of farm land animal habitats, homes and cause large scale migration of people
change in climates around the world ➡️some regions wil become warmer, colder, drier and wetter, drought could destroy vast regions of farmland across the globe leading to a world food shortage and mass starvation

13
Q

what are the first 3 water treatment steps in order with explanations

A

screen - to remove large bits of solid waste eg branches, leaves
sand filters- remove smaller bits of solid waste eg suspended grit
sedimentation tank - water is left to settle ➡️ fine particles of solid fall to the bottom of the tank as sediment

14
Q

what are the last 2 water treatment steps

A

further sand filters - remove finer solid particles
chlorine is added - doesnt purify but sterilises water

16
Q

what did democritus suggest

A

all substances were made out of atoms

17
Q

what did john dalton propose

A

-matter us composed of tiny particles called atoms
-atoms of a particular element are alike in size, shape and weight but differ from atoms of other elements
-during chemical changes, atoms of different elements unite forming molecules (compounds)
-during these chemical changes, atoms themselves dont change
-when atoms combine they do so in definite whole number ratios

18
Q

what did jj thomson do

A

discovered electrons with cathode rays

19
Q

what did james chadwick do

A

did experiments that confirmed the existence of the electron

20
Q

what is the relative charge of a proton

21
Q

what is the relative charge of a neutron

22
Q

what is the relative charge of an electron

23
Q

what is the relative mass of a proton

24
Q

what is the relative mass of a neutron

25
what is the relative mass of an electron
1/1860
26
what do all atoms of the same element have
same number of protons
27
what is the relationship between the protons and the electrons in an atom
the number of electons = the number of protons in the nucleus
28
how do you work out the number of neutrons
mass number - atomic number
29
what are isotopes
atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons in the nucleus
30
give an example of an isotope
chlorine 35 and chlorine 37
31
how many electrons can each shell hold
the first can hold up to 2, the second can hold up to 8, the third can hold up to 8
