Atomic Nature Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does matter mean?
Anything that takes up space and mass
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object
What are the 3 states of matter?
Liquid,solid,gas
Describe the state of matter of solid
The particles are, there are not strong forces that hold them together, they vibrate a little but don’t move e.g. ice
Describe the state of matter liquid
These particles can move and slide past each other, forces are weaker then solid, these particles vibrate more e.g. water
Describe the state of matter gas
These particles are separated and move around a lot, there are very weak forces between the particles, the particles are always in motion and hit each other and the container e.g. steam
What are the properties of solids?
Definite shape, definite volume, difficult to compress, do not flow
What are the properties of liquids?
No Definite shape
Definite volume
Difficult to compress
Flow easily
What are the properties of gas?
No definite shape
No definite volume
Easy to compress
Diffuse to fill all available space
What is diffusion?
Lt
The movement of particles from a high area of concentration to a low area of concentration
What are the changes of state?
Melting: solid-liquid Melting point: the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
Boiling:gas-liquid Boiling point: the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas throughout the liquid
Evaporation: liquid-gas The change of a liquid to a gas at the surface of the liquid
Condensation: gas-liquid The change of a gas to a liquid
Freezing: liquid to solid Freezing point: the temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid
