Atomic Structure Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the relative charge and relative atomic mass of a proton
RAM=1
Relative charge=+1
What is the RAM and relative charge of a neutron
RAM=1
relative charge=0
What is the RAM and relative charge of an electron
RAM=1/2000
Relative charge=-1
What is the radius of an atom
1x10-10
What is an isotope
Same number of protons different number of neutrons
How can an electron change orbit
They absorb energy (radiation)
What is ionisation
When an electron gains too much radiation it can escape from the atom completely
What are the dangers of ionising radiation
-causes cells to mutate=cancer
-kills instantly or overtime
-can cause mutations in unborn babies
-hair loss
-vomiting
-fatigue
-death in 2-6 days for high dose
What is alpha radiation
When an alpha particle is emitted from the nucleus so the atom becomes a different element
What do alpha particles have
- protons and neutrons
-2+ charge
-STRONGLY ionising
-dangerous inside
-stopped by paper
-range of a few cm in the air
-same structure as helium nucleus
