Atomic structure Flashcards
(10 cards)
Protons
Positively charged particles found in the nucleus
Has mass of 1
+1 charge
Neutrons
Neutral particles found in nucleus
Mass of 1
Charge of 0
Electrons
Negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in energy levels or shell
Mass is close to 0
-1 charge
Nucleus
A dense, positively charged centre of the atom that contains protons and neutrons
Almost all the atoms mass is concentrated here
Electron shells
The shells are filled in a specific order of electrons
First cell-2
Second shell-8
Third shell-8. etc
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus which defines the element
Usually shown on top of an atoms box in periodic table
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus
Mass number isnt usually shown on periodic table
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Same atomic number but different mass number
Ions
Atoms can lose or gain electrons to form ions
So there are either positively charged ions or negatively charged ions
