atomic structure, electron configuration + periodic table Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the three types of subatomic particles and their charges?
proton (positive charge), electron (negative charge), neutron (neutral charge)
What are all the parts of the atom?
Nucleus (protons and neutrons), Electrons, shells
How do you determine the atomic number?
A - atomic number, P - protons, E - electrons
How to calculate the mass number?
Mass number = protons + neutrons
What is the electron configuration rule?
2, 8, 8, 2
What is the maximum number of electrons in the first 4 shells?
The rule for the max number of electrons is 2n²
Shell 1 : 2, Shell 2 : 8, Shell 3 : 18, Shell 4 : 32
What are the 4 main groups of the periodic table?
alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, and noble gases
What do period numbers tell us about an element?
The number of shells that the atom has occupied by electrons.
What do group numbers tell us about an element?
Group numbers (1,2, 13-18) tell us the amount of valence electrons in an atom, from 13 onwards forget the 1.
What are the most reactive groups on the periodic table?
Alkali metals and halogens.
Why are noble gases not reactive?
Because they have a full valence shell.
Describe the common features of elements in the same group or period.
Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons. Elements in the same period share the same number of shells.
