Atomic Theory Exam Review Flashcards
(10 cards)
What were the three main points of Dalton’s atomic theory?
- Elements consist of indivisible small particles.
- All atoms are the same element and are identical.
- Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed.
Who discovered the first subatomic particle?
J.J. Thompson
How did Thompson discover the first subatomic particle?
Discovered the electron, To test the properties of the particles, Thomson placed two oppositely-charged electric plates around the cathode ray. The cathode ray was deflected away from the negatively-charged electric plate and toward the positively-charged plate. This indicated that the cathode ray was composed of negatively-charged particles.
The three main subatomic particles?
Protons, Neutrons, and electrons.
What conclusions did rutherford draw from his gold foil experiment?
Discovered the nucleus because the fine beams that he shot at the atom during testing hit something often towards the center of the atom proving an abundance.
Bohr Model of Phosphorus
First Level under 2, the rest up to 8.
Bohr model for the molecule formed when potassium bonds with chlorine
