Atoms, Ions, and Compounds Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is an atom made up of?
A central nucleus containg protons and neutrons with electrons on shells orbitting it.
What is the charge of subatomic particles relative to a proton?
Neutron: 0
Electron: -1
What is the mass of subatomic particles relative to a proton?
Neutron: 1
Electron: 1/1836
What is the mass number?
Number of protons and neutrons
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons
What is an ion?
Atoms with a different number of protons and electrons so have an overall charge.
What is an isotope?
an element of an atom with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
How do isotopes of the same element reactions differ?
They react the same
What did John Dalton propose?
Atoms are spheres that differ in size
What did JJ Thomson propose?
Plum pudding model and discovery of electrons
What did Ernest Rutherford propose?
a central positive nucleas proved by gold leaf experiment
What did Neil Bohr propose?
Electrons orbit in shells, proved by an EM radiation experiment showing electrons moving energy levels
Define relative atomic mass
weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12 th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
Define Isotopic Mass
mass of an atom of an isotope compared to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon- 12
Whats on the y and x axis for mass spectra
Y axis: Abundance
X axis: mass /charge or m /z or specific charge
How do you work out Relative atomic mass from a mass spectra.
(abundanceA x m /zA) + (abundance B x m /z B) all divided by Total abundance
